Psalm 46 For the choir director: A psalm of the descendants of Korah, to be sung by soprano voices.A song. 1 God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. 2 So we will not fear, even if earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. 3 Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! 4 A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. 5 God himself lives in that city; it cannot be destroyed. God will protect it at the break of day. 6 The nations are in an uproar, and kingdoms crumble! God thunders, and the earth melts! 7 The LORD Almighty is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. 8 Come, see the glorious works of the LORD: See how he brings destruction upon the world 9 and causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear in two; he burns the shields with fire. 10 "Be silent, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world." 11 The LORD Almighty is here among us.
I can almost hear surf pounding on the shore; lightning lighting the sky and thunder echoing through the hills as God makes Himself be known! He is our fortress! He is our defender! Nations fall before Him, peace breaks out as He destroys war on the earth...
Powerful images, resounding noises... followed by... "Be silent, and know that I am God!"...
Being silent, being still, not an easy trait for most of us. Listening, also not something that comes naturally to each of us. Yet, despite all of the clamor in the beginning of this psalm, it ends with a call to quiet, a call to "know" in that stillness that God is God. He is not going anywhere. He remains in all things and through all times, always ready to help in times of trouble.
He can make quite an entrance, but if we want to hear Him, it will almost always be in those still, quiet moments when we are in His presence, listening closely.
It is the "discipline" part of being a "disciple of Christ"... and the psalm ends with a reassuring thought... "The Lord Almighty is here among us"...always...all times...in all things...
Lord, may I be still, be silent and hear Your voice this day. May my heart be lifted and my mind renewed through Your touch.
BE ENCOURAGED!! God really isn't going anywhere and He loves hanging out with You!
Drink water...I know it has no flavor, but it is really good for you... Exercise...feels good when it's done... Pray...even if it's brief and to the point, God hears... Listen to those around you, be kind and gracious even when others are not... Be blessed...
